New From Ponsse: Next Gen Opti 5G System
Ponsse continuously develops solutions that improve the work of forest machine operators, and is now introducing the next-generation Opti 5G information system for tracked-based machines. The system is specifically designed to enhance productivity, ease of use, and data management in demanding conditions.
The customizable “My View” display allows quick setting adjustments without interruption, and the active map view enhances safety and situational awareness, says Markku Savolainen, Product Manager, Harvester Heads, Ponsse Plc.
Opti 5G produces accurate, real-time data on machine performance, working time, production, and fuel consumption. Thanks to standardized StanForD 2010 data, the system is compatible with international harvesting systems and can be expanded with additional applications. Designed for global use, Opti 5G supports multiple languages and units of measurement. The system also allows marking tree specific data, such as decay or insect damage observations, for reporting purposes.
Usability has been significantly improved: Fast response time, clear menus, and three main logical views (work, planning and machine) support smooth operation. The experience is complemented by the new Opti 8X display, offering excellent visibility and high touch precision even in demanding conditions.
Opti 5G is now available as standard equipment for all Ponsse harvester heads installed on tracked machines.

Study Shows Site, Rotation Affects Carbon Sequestration Rate
Forest modeling research at Oregon State University’s College of Forestry shows a tract’s productivity is the top factor determining the rotation time that allows for the most above-ground carbon sequestration. Using OSU’s 11,000 acre McDonald-Dunn Research Forest as a study area, researchers inventoried more than 300 tracts known from past activities that varied widely in productivity levels. The data was run through modeling software that predicts changes in vegetation due to natural disturbances or management activities…
