Michigan Group Honors Top Logging Safety Records
During the 2025 Timbermen’s Convention held late April in Sault Ste. Marie, the Michigan Assn. of Timbermen’s (MAT) Self-Insurance Fund (MATSIF) celebrating some top safety awards during the event’s annual safety awards banquet. In all, six logging companies—BKP Logging, Grade A Logging, Luther & Sons Logging, Maeder Logging, Northland Harvesting and Whittaker Land & Timber—received 10-year safety awards. Two companies—Clarence McNamara Jr. Logging and Mannisto Forest Products—received 15-year safety awards. One company, Shamco Inc., received a 20-year safety award and Willie Outman Forest Products, LLC of Lake City took home a 45-year safety award! Habitat Management of Michigan/Great Lakes Nursery Soils of Muskegon received a MATSIF Merit Award. The banquet drew a crowd of 250 to the safety celebration. MATSIF has a 45+ year history of providing a quality workers’ compensation program to the wood products industry.

2024 Logger Survey: Working Tough Ground
Loggers across the U.S. responded to Timber Harvesting’s recent 2024 Logger Survey, which showed that contractors in all parts of the country are having a tough time grappling with rising costs and dropping demand in some areas. For example, for the first time ever across 20-plus years of logger surveys, the number of loggers who rate their company’s financial health “poor” (9%) to “very poor” (21%) outnumber those who say “good” (21%) to “very good” (7%)—30% to 28% overall in favor of the negatives.
